We just finished up this kitchen and laundry renovation in Scarborough, and it’s a great example of how a few smart material choices can completely change the feel of a home. If you look at the 'before' photo, the old kitchen felt dated and heavy. While we had to work around the existing support pillar, we managed to make the whole space feel twice as big just by streamlining the layout.
We swapped out the old raised breakfast bar for a single-level benchtop using 20mm YDL Stone in 'Acqua Mare'. It’s a much cleaner look and gives the owners a huge, flat workspace that doesn't cut the room off from the rest of the house.
To keep that coastal feel, we went with 'Egg White' Two Pack cabinetry in a semi-gloss finish. It’s not as "clinical" as a pure white and looks incredible against the herringbone tile splashback. We also recessed some LED strip lighting under the overheads to really make those tiles pop at night. For the hardware, we used dark Stefano Orlati handles, which give a nice bit of contrast against the lighter doors.
Everything runs on Blum 'Merivobox' soft-close drawers, so the kitchen feels just as high-end as it looks.
We carried the same look into the laundry to keep the house feeling connected. We matched the 'Egg White' cabinetry and herringbone tiles, but opted for Polytec 'Tasmanian Oak' laminate for the benchtops. It’s a hard-wearing choice for a laundry and the woodgrain adds some nice warmth to the room. We even managed to squeeze in a chrome hanging rail, which is a lifesaver for drying clothes out of the weather.
